Salam Alaikom. I found this in an old Architectural Record. An interview with Tadao Ando, a couple of quotes:
The logic of Modernism, you could say, is born from functionalism, as we know it, but that’s only the begining of what Modernism is all about. Modernist Architecture also has to deal with people. And people always relate to the spirit of the place, or to the spirit of the time.
If you give people nothingness, they can ponder about what can be achieved from that nothingness.
Now since I found the whole article, I’ll just move on and comment on those 2 quotes up there. I second on the last line of the first quote modestly. I’m having problems digesting what I’d call ‘abusing’ Modernism or furthermore Deconstuctivism nowadays, learners just using a few concepts of the style - for example ‘Irregularity’ not as a concept but as a ‘trend’ - without relating to a deeper reference either in its conceptual context, nor the physical envelope (In most of the cases that is). Tadao’s view in my humble opinion combines what is Spiritual and what is simple and lifeless to one’s taste, in original architecture language and form with modern elements.
